High Pressure One Side,
Atmospheric Pressure On Other Side

  1. A mechanical valve which contains a blocking gland is installed on the piping to be breached.
  2. A blocking gland is inserted through the wall of the pipe and flow is shutoff.
  3. The pipe is then cut downstream of the perpendicular blocking gland and opened to atmosphere.
  4. A pneumatic end cap seal with a sliding axial blocking gland is installed on the open end of the pipe (pipe with perpendicular-blocking valve).
  5. The perpendicular blocking gland is then retracted and the sliding axial blocking gland is pushed upstream past the insertion point of the perpendicular-blocking valve.
  6. The axial gland is then compressed to seal the piping.
  7. The mechanical blocking valve and pneumatic end cap seal is cutoff the piping.
  1. One SMARTFIT® shape memory alloy coupling and one medical gas valve with extensions is then inserted over the axial blocking gland.
  2. The SMARTFIT® Coupling makes a leak tight joint in approximately 30 seconds.
  3. The pneumatic end cap seal is installed on the open end of the new medical gas valve and the sliding axial blocking gland is retracted out of the pipe past the new valve.
  4. The new valve is turned off and the pneumatic end cap with axial blocking gland is removed.
  5. The open end of the new valve is then connected to the piping system downstream of the new valve with a second SMARTFIT® Coupling.
  6. The valve is then opened and the gas is allowed to flow back into the portion of piping that was reduced to atmosphere.

High Pressure on Both Sides

This procedure is done in the same manner as stated above, except that two blocking glands are used and the piping is cut in between them. Prior to cutting the pipe a by- pass is setup around the area that is being worked on. Three SMARTFIT® couplings are used in this procedure.

Additional Factors Include:

  • The entire process does not introduce any contamination into the piping system.
  • The mechanical blocking valve with perpendicular blocking gland has been tested and rated to 500 psig.
  • The axial blocking gland has been tested and rated to 500 psig.
  • The pneumatic end seal has been tested and rated for 1000 psig.
  • The SMARTFIT® Couplings have been tested and rated to burst pressure of the copper pipe approximately 7500 psig.
